Discussion on Licenses and DRM

Discussion on GPL, DRM and GPL3. speakers: Erik Josefsson (FFII), Eben Moglen (FSF) and Arnoud Engelfriet (Phillips).

Discussion on Licenses and DRM Software licenses will continue to play a crucial role in the further growth of free/libre/open source software (FLOSS). However, some developments need further reflection and these are the topics of this discussion. 1. The success of FLOSS has also brought a proliferation of sometimes incompatible licenses. What can we do about this? Should every programmer become a lawyer? What can we do to simplify the life of the programmer? 2. There is a tendency for FLOSS licenses to cover new issues like dataformats that are not allowed (e.g. proprietary formats), restrictions on usage (e.g. DRM), or restrictions on hardware. What are the implications of this development? 3. What could be the effect of GPLv3? Should the Linux kernel change to GPLv3? 4. What is the effect of FLOSS licenses on innovation? 5. What is the effect of FLOSS licenses on the public sector? Participants in the discussion are Arnoud Engelfriet (European patent attorney, Philips Electronics), Erik Josefsson (President FFII Sweden), Eben Moglen (architect of GPLv3, general counsel of the Free Software Foundation) and is moderated by Paul Klint (Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica and University opf Amsterdam).
